When and why did you start training for fighting? I started training martial arts when I was 10 years old. I’m from the inner city of Dublin, which is a rough area, and knowing how to fight as a boy is crucial for self-defense and has saved my life many times throughout my life. Once I had my first kickboxing competition, I was hooked and obsessed ever since.
What ranks and titles have you held? Irish kickboxing titles, world bronze medal in kickboxing, Irish MMA title, RISE MMA world title (beating Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira)
Do you have any heroes? My mother and my nanny are my heroes. They’ve been through it all and never gave up and are both the hardest workers I’ve ever seen. It’s where I got my work ethic.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s everything to me; in Ireland before anybody was watching the UFC, I used to watch it on Bravo. I said out loud to family and friends at a very young age that I’ll fight here someday. They laughed and thought I was stupid and that it was impossible. But I’ve never given up on it. It’s been a lifetime of hard work and self-belief.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Never finished school or college. I was kicked out when I was 16 and worked full time in a martial arts gym. That’s been my only job, teaching martial arts and competing.
What was your job before you started fighting? I worked in a pub for one year at 15-16, then just teaching martial arts.
