Waldo Cortes Acosta (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) defeats Robelis Despaigne by unanimous decision

In the main card opener, heavyweight prospect Waldo Cortes Acosta improved to 12-1 as a pro with a dominant three-round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten knockout artist Robelis Despaigne.

After weathering an early blitz from Despaigne, Cortes Acosta took the fight to the canvas in an attempt to test his foe’s stamina and ground game. And he did the former, but not really the latter, as he largely held the Cuban down until the horn sounded.

Despaigne again came out aggressively to begin round two, and Cortes Acosta embraced it as he searched for another takedown. And while that didn’t immediately happen, he did try to play mind games with his foe as he shook off any incoming fire before the takedown came midway through the frame. For the rest of the round, the Dominican Republic native remained in control, staying busy enough with strikes to maintain position.

A third takedown followed for Cortes Acosta in the final frame, and that was all she wrote for Despaigne, who fell to 5-1 after losing the decision by scores of 30-27, 30-27, 30-26.

Sean Woodson (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) defeats Alex Caceres by unanimous decision

St. Louis’ Sean Woodson got the biggest win of his career in his backyard, as he defeated featherweight veteran Alex Caceres via unanimous decision.

Sean Woodson Post-Fight Interview | UFC St. Louis

Woodson’s reach and unorthodox striking frustrated Caceres in the first round, and while “Bruce Leeroy” got closer to the hometown hero in the second, “The Sniper” was still living up to his nickname enough to maintain the lead. Caceres continued to surge in the third, but it wasn’t enough to turn the fight around.

Diego Ferreira defeats Mateusz Rębecki by TKO (strikes) at 4:59 of Round 3

Diego Ferreira put an end to rising lightweight star Mateusz Rębecki's 16-fight winning streak with an emphatic third-round stoppage.

Rebecki (19-2) was sharp with nearly everything he threw in the first round, with the big winner being a left hand that dropped Ferreira with a little over a minute left. Rebecki tried to end matters with his ground strikes, but Ferreira recovered and made it out of the round.

Diego Ferreira Post-Fight Interview | UFC St. Louis
/

It was a different fight in the second stanza, as Ferreira (19-5) used his strikes to cut his foe and nearly close his eyes, prompting a visit from the Octagonside physician. When the fight resumed, Rebecki scored a takedown, but Ferreira returned the favor and nearly sunk in an arm triangle choke before the horn intervened.

Ferreira’s marksmanship was on display again in the third, with only Rebecki’s toughness keeping him in the fight. The Poland native did get a takedown, but Ferreira reversed position and fired off ground strikes before the pair rose to their feet. After staggering Rebecki, Ferreira got another takedown and poured on the strikes, prompting referee Gary Copeland to stop the fight with nine seconds remaining.

Co-Main Event: Joaquin Buckley (30-27, 30-26, 29-27) defeats Nursulton Ruziboev by unanimous decision

The St. Louis crowd roared early and often as one of their own, welterweight contender Joaquin Buckley gave them an entertaining unanimous decision win over Nursulton Ruziboev in the UFC Fight Night co-main event.

Scores were 30-27, 30-26 and 29-27 for the No.11-ranked Buckley, now 19-6. Ruziboev falls to 34-9-2, 2 NC.

The 5-foot-10 Buckley took away the reach advantage of the 6-foot-5 Ruziboev just before the two-minute mark with a takedown that ignited the crowd. The two didn’t stay there long, and upon rising, Buckley fired off hooks, Ruziboev responded, and then there was an explosive knockdown from Buckley as Ruziboev attempted a flying knee. With a little over a minute left, the pair rose and measured each other before Buckley called for action and delivered some in the closing seconds.

Joaquin Buckley Post-Fight Interview | UFC St. Louis

Buckley opened the second with another takedown, which had become a point-scoring method for the local favorite. But when standing, Buckley wasn’t playing for points; he was swinging for the fences. Ruziboev was active in spurts, landing a couple knees, but he wasn’t doing anything to deter Buckley from throwing and getting another takedown.

In the opening minute of the final round, a left hand dropped Ruziboev, and while the Uzbekistan native recovered quickly and got upright, he was tired, and as he slipped to the canvas, Buckley pounced and got into the mount, where he let go with both hands. Ruziboev survived and got into Buckley’s guard, where he fired off his own shots. A scramble ensued and Buckley regained control until a couple illegal kicks by Ruziboev forced a restart by referee Keith Peterson, with the final uneventful moments taking place on the feet.

Main Event: Derrick Lewis defeats Rodrigo Nascimento by TKO at :49 of Round 3

The UFC’s knockout king added to his record, as Derrick Lewis stopped fellow heavyweight contender Rodrigo Nascimento in the third round of their UFC Fight Night main event at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, lifting his all-time total to 15.

Lewis promised some surprises, and after a head kick, he attempted a takedown and got it. Nascimento rose immediately and pushed Lewis to the fence, the two trading positions in the clinch until separating at the two-minute mark. Lewis clipped Nascimento with a right hand, but the Brazilian took it well before getting his own takedown. There, Nascimento was in complete control, but with 30 seconds left, Lewis was able to reverse position and stay there until the horn.

Derrick Lewis Post-Fight Interview | UFC St. Louis

Lewis had success with his strikes early in the second, only to find himself in the clinch again. When he found daylight, he scored, and he was the only one doing so, as Nascimento was seemingly content with holding the Texan in the clinch. With under two minutes left, a failed takedown attempt by Lewis allowed Nascimento to take the back briefly before moving into half guard, where he got off a few elbows.

In the opening minute of the third round, a looping right hand rocked and dropped Nascimento, and after a series of unanswered ground strikes, referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight. The official time was :49 of round three.

With the win, the No.12 ranked Lewis moves to 28-12, 1 NC. The No. 15 ranked Nascimento falls to 11-2, 1 NC.
